DayZ motorbikes arrived with Update 1.30 and DayZ Badlands, and they're the first two-wheelers in the game: the small Jana moped and the much faster Enduro dirt bike. Here's how they compare, where to find them, how to keep them running and what happens when you crash. Everything comes from Bohemia Interactive's own dev blog and update posts. Bohemia marked the dev blog details as work in progress before release, so small values may have changed.

Which is better in DayZ, the moped or the Enduro?

It depends what you need:

  • Jana moped: inspired by the Czech Jawa 50/05, the bike "every teenager had or wanted" in the late '60s. It tops out around 70 km/h and comes in three fixed colors: blue, red and yellow.
  • Enduro: based on the rare Jawa 500 682 Bitrak racing bike, it reaches around 130 km/h, nearly twice as fast. It comes in red, yellow, green and blue, and some parts can be swapped to mix and match colors (purely cosmetic).

If you find an Enduro, take it: it covers ground far faster, which matters on Nasdara, the biggest official DayZ map at 267 km².

Where do you find motorbikes in DayZ?

Bohemia says bikes were made for Nasdara, so that's where you'll find most of them, but they also spawn on Chernarus, Livonia and Sakhal in lower numbers. You don't need DayZ Badlands to ride one: motorbikes came to every map in the free 1.30 update.

How do you repair a motorbike in DayZ?

  • Repair bikes with a blowtorch.
  • No battery needed, unlike cars, so getting one running is less of a hassle.
  • Tyres can be replaced.
  • Look after the spark plug: bikes have small frames but powerful engines, and pushing the speed limit can damage it. Bohemia says cautious riders shouldn't need to worry.

Can you push a motorbike in DayZ?

Yes. You can walk the bike while the engine is off or in neutral, to reposition it or, if your spark plug has gone, drag it into the shade. Gears work the same as in other vehicles.

Can you carry loot or passengers on a DayZ motorbike?

No. Bikes have no inventory space and carry only the rider, with no passenger seat. They're purely for getting around, so you'll still need a car for group travel or hauling loot.

What happens if you crash a motorbike in DayZ?

Crash at a relatively high speed and you're thrown off. Other players see your character ragdoll, the first time ragdolls have been back in DayZ in years, and every player sees your body in the same position. From your own view, you briefly fall unconscious, so a crash in a hot zone can be deadly.

Can you do jumps and stunts?

Small ones. Bohemia has placed ramps all over Nasdara, but there's no air control, so you can't adjust the bike mid-jump. Riding feels different from cars, with leaning built into turns, and the headlight follows where you steer.

Do I need DayZ Badlands for motorbikes?

No. The bikes are part of free Update 1.30. DayZ Badlands, the paid expansion with the Nasdara map, costs $24.99 / £22.49 / €24.99 on Steam and is where bikes are most common. For more on surviving the desert, see our 13 beginner tips for Nasdara.
