DayZ Badlands Guide: 12 Beginner Tips to Survive Nasdara
Our DayZ Badlands guide covers water, heat, clothing, rebuilding bases, the code lock, motorbikes, dogs and loot, so you're ready for Nasdara on October 15.

Nasdara isn't Chernarus. The new map in DayZ Badlands, out on October 15, 2026, is the hottest and largest terrain Bohemia has ever made for DayZ, with very little water, harsh sun and a whole set of new systems. This DayZ Badlands guide gathers the 12 most useful things to know before you spawn in, so your first life lasts longer than your last one.
Badlands isn't out yet, so every tip here comes from Bohemia's official Badlands dev blogs and Update 1.30 notes, not from hands-on play. Bohemia describes those details as a work in progress, so some may change at launch. We'll update this guide once Nasdara is live.
DayZ Badlands guide: the essentials at a glance
| Biggest threat | Thirst and heat: there's very little standing water |
| What to wear | Light, breathable clothing, head and face cover, dust goggles |
| Base building | Rebuild or barricade 5,000+ broken houses, plus a code lock |
| Transport | New moped (~70km/h) and enduro (~130km/h) motorbikes |
| Watch out for | Guard dogs at military zones, sandstorms, regional diseases |
1. How do you get water in DayZ Badlands?
Water is the number one problem. Bohemia says Nasdara has very little standing water, thanks to a drought, a damaged reservoir and years of neglect. Instead, you'll need new and more interactive ways to get it, based on traditional methods used in dry regions. If you ignore your thirst, the consequences build up, starting with sweating and ending in death.
Tip: carry every bottle and canteen you can, drink whenever you find safe water, and plan routes around water rather than loot.
2. Restore wells and they help everyone
Some wells will be working, but others need repairing before they give drinking water, and Bohemia hints that some may need two players working together. Fixing a well near your base is one of the best long-term investments on a server, and it helps every survivor who passes by.
3. Stay out of the sun, and cover up
For the first time, direct sunlight affects your character's stats. Keep your body covered, rest in the shade, and don't sprint across open ground at midday. Nights swing the other way: Bohemia says temperatures drop sharply after dark, though not to freezing, so keep a warmer layer handy.
4. What should you wear in DayZ Badlands?
Look for the new regional clothing: Kameez tunics, Shalwar trousers, sandals, vests, keffiyehs, turbans, pakol hats, face wraps and dust goggles. In Nasdara, items like glasses, goggles and face coverings aren't just cosmetic: Bohemia says protecting your eyes and airways from dust matters as much as staying hydrated.
There's a trade-off. Lighter clothing usually has less inventory space than heavy jackets and military gear, so you'll need to pack more carefully and decide what's worth carrying.
5. Sandstorms and dust can give you away
Sandstorms sweep across Nasdara, so keep goggles and a face covering on you. Dust also works against you in other ways: vehicles kick up a big dust cloud on dusty ground, which other players can spot from a distance, and walking on upper floors makes floors creak and dust fall from the ceiling, which can alert anyone below. The good news is that it works both ways, so listen out.

6. How does rebuilding work in DayZ Badlands?
Instead of only building fences in a field, you can rebuild or barricade broken houses. Bohemia says there are over 5,000 rebuildable houses, in about 20 variants, and you'll usually spot them when you open your inventory indoors. Mud and stone houses are only a cosmetic difference: how strong your base is depends on the materials you use.
- Materials: the new brick and mortar, applied with a new trowel, plus the usual logs, planks and metal sheets. Mix and match.
- Clear the rubble in a broken house first: it gives you some building materials back.
- Start small: you don't have to rebuild everything. Block one entrance, add a door and a window to one room, and you have a stash house.
- Location: houses far from towns are more damaged and need more materials, but Bohemia says they're the best spots for bases.
7. How does the DayZ code lock work?
The code lock finally arrives with Update 1.30, and it works on the new rebuildable doors and on existing fences, on every map. Key things to know:
- It needs a charged V9 battery. When the battery dies, the lock unlocks automatically, so check the battery level (shown on the back of the lock indoors) regularly.
- While it's on a door, it's indestructible. If it's damaged when not attached, repair it with an electronic kit.
- It has brute-force protection: after several wrong PINs it temporarily refuses new codes, and the lockout gets longer with more failed attempts.
8. Ride the new motorbikes, carefully
Update 1.30 adds two bikes: the Jana moped (about 70km/h) and the enduro dirt bike (about 130km/h). They're ideal for crossing a 267km² map, but they have no inventory and no passenger seat. Push them too hard and you can damage the spark plug. Repair them with a blowtorch, and you can walk a bike by hand to move it or drag it into the shade. They don't need a separate battery. If you crash at speed you'll be knocked unconscious, so don't ride flat out near danger.
9. Avoid the guard dogs at military zones
Dogs are DayZ's first territorial animal. Packs of Dobermans and German Shepherds guard specific locations, mainly military zones, and attack anyone who enters their territory. You can't tame them. Go in prepared, or with friends.
10. Hunt desert monitors and mouflons for food
Nasdara's signature animal is the desert monitor lizard, found mostly in and around the Dasht-e Sarman desert. It runs away when it spots you, but you can hunt it for food, and Bohemia hints it drops other useful items too. The mouflon, a wild sheep, roams the mountains and steppes.
11. Where is the best loot in DayZ Badlands?
- Bazaars: covered markets with regular shops (general loot) and gun shops, which spawn military loot. Spot gun shops by the gun signs and barred windows. Loot also spawns along the corridors.
- Rooftops: many town rooftops connect, letting you move between buildings and loot faster, but you'll be exposed.
- Regional weapons: the Jambiya dagger keeps its condition longer than normal knives, the one-handed scimitar has long reach, the Lee-Enfield uses 7.62×54mmR (the same as the Mosin), and the MP-18 shares magazines with the Luger pistol.
12. Use the terrain to survive firefights
Open ground favours snipers, so move between cover. Bohemia points to walls, fences, rocks and bushes for cover, and the dried-up Sefid-Darya and Siyah-Darya riverbeds as natural protected routes. In cities, crowded alleys and markets are good for breaking line of sight, and campers in tall buildings can usually be countered from neighbouring structures. Important signs are in both English and Farsi, so you can still navigate.
