Does Subnautica 2 Have Dedicated Servers? Multiplayer, Crossplay and Co-op Explained
Subnautica 2 multiplayer is 4-player co-op hosted by one player, with crossplay on Steam, Epic and Xbox. Dedicated servers? Not officially. Here's how it works.

Subnautica 2 multiplayer lets up to four players (you and three friends) explore, build and survive together in online co-op, and it works across PC and Xbox with crossplay. What it doesn't have, as of October 2026, is official dedicated servers: one player hosts the world. Here's everything Unknown Worlds has confirmed about co-op, crossplay, save sharing and the Buddy System update, taken from the studio's own help center and patch notes.

Does Subnautica 2 have dedicated servers?
No, not officially. In Subnautica 2, one player hosts the co-op world from the game's Host Multiplayer menu and friends join that session. Unknown Worlds hasn't released dedicated server files, and neither its help center nor its patch notes announce them for Early Access. The studio's own support advice also shows how it works: if you're hosting and the session lags, it recommends lowering your graphics settings, because your PC is running the game for everyone.
Some server-hosting companies advertise Subnautica 2 servers. Without official server software, check exactly what you'd be paying for before you sign up. We'll update this article if Unknown Worlds announces dedicated servers.
How does Subnautica 2 multiplayer work?
You start a world in Multiplayer mode and invite friends with a code. The official steps are:
- To add a friend: Main Menu → Play with Friends → Friend Code, then enter your friend's code.
- To be invited: Main Menu → Play with Friends → Generate Code, then send the code to your friend.
You don't need a separate account. Unknown Worlds says you play with the account from the store you bought the game on (Steam, Epic or Xbox), with no third-party sign-up or linking.
Can you turn a single-player save into co-op?
Yes. Go to Main Menu → Play Single Player, pick your save and choose Convert to Multiplayer. It works the other way too: Main Menu → Host Multiplayer, pick the save and choose Convert to Single Player.
Can friends keep playing without the host?
The world lives in the host's save, so friends join the host's session. If someone else wants to carry on the same world, the host can share the save with them using a cloud save code (see below), and they can then host it themselves.

Is Subnautica 2 crossplay?
Yes. Unknown Worlds says the in-game invite system lets you join friends across all supported platforms, and Steam lists cross-platform multiplayer. That covers PC on Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Windows Store, plus Xbox Series X|S. The studio's multiplayer dev vlog also covered crossplay on handhelds, including the Steam Deck and the ROG Xbox Ally series.
One catch: everyone in a session has to be on the same version of the game. Players on the opt-in Experimental branch can't join players on the default build.
Can you share Subnautica 2 saves across platforms?
Yes. Open your saved games (single-player or multiplayer), select a save and choose Save to Cloud. Copy the code it generates, then enter it under Import Save File (bottom left of the main menu) on the other platform. Since the Buddy System update, you can paste save codes straight into the box. Saves can't be moved between the Experimental and default branches this way.
What did the Buddy System update add to multiplayer?
Early Access 1.2, the Buddy System update, arrived on August 19, 2026 and was built around playing together:
- Proximity voice chat: players get harder to hear as they move apart. You can set it to always on, push to talk or always off.
- Revives: players can revive each other before reprinting. Revived players keep their equipment and get back a little oxygen.
- Player trading: you can hand items directly to another player.
- Emotes: Wave, Clap, Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down and Frustrated, from a new radial menu.
- Tracking Tag: a short-range beacon you can put in a locker or other carryable.
- Two new characters, Jegna and Grace, plus new color schemes.
- Multiplayer fixes, including clients desyncing when moving Growbed items and base pieces being invisible to players with high latency.
Two follow-up hotfixes fixed more co-op problems. The second, on October 6, improved voice chat detection and fixed players seeing the host as dead after their own death. An earlier update (Early Access 1.1, July 8) had already stopped audiologs from auto-playing for everyone in a session.

Do you need Game Pass for Subnautica 2 multiplayer on Xbox?
Yes. Unknown Worlds' Early Access 1.1 notes say a Game Pass subscription (any tier) is required to play multiplayer on Xbox, and the game now shows a notice if you try without one. Subnautica 2 is also included with Xbox Game Pass. On PC, online co-op needs no subscription.
Is Subnautica 2 on PS5 or Switch?
Not at the moment. Subnautica 2 is on PC (Steam, Epic and the Windows Store) and Xbox Series X|S. Unknown Worlds says "more may be added in the future", but there's no PlayStation or Nintendo version announced. There's no official macOS or Linux support either, though the studio is working to make sure it runs on the Steam Deck.
Is Subnautica 2 a single-player game?
Yes. Unknown Worlds calls it a "single-player first experience". Co-op is optional, and the full story and world are the same whether you play alone or with friends. When fans worried about the game's direction in 2025, the studio wrote that nothing had changed: it would stay single-player first, with optional co-op and "no subscriptions".

What players are saying about Subnautica 2 co-op
Subnautica 2 is rated Very Positive on Steam overall (91% of more than 128,000 reviews), and recent reviews are still Very Positive at 82%. The most upvoted reviews from the last two months are more critical, though, and many of them talk about co-op:
- Steam reviewer Moisty said co-op "is well implemented" and that proximity voice chat "forces you to actually stay and work together".
- Sparta enjoyed it but wants upgrades such as inventory space shared in multiplayer, because right now every player has to earn them separately.
- rami complained that when the host opens their PDA, the game pauses for the other players, with no setting to turn it off.
- Scout The Spartan called it "fun with friends" but felt content updates have been sparse, a complaint that comes up again and again in recent reviews.
These are individual players' opinions. Unknown Worlds hasn't commented on the PDA pause or shared upgrades in its patch notes so far.
What's next for Subnautica 2? Early Access 2
On October 15, 2026, Unknown Worlds started a new dev vlog series called "The Voyage to Early Access 2 Begins", setting up its next big content update. There's no date for Early Access 2 yet. The studio says Early Access will run "over the next few years", with regular free content updates and no paid DLC planned. It also expects the price to go up when the full game launches, and promises advance notice.
Official mod support isn't available in Early Access, although the studio "would like to consider" it later. Community mods do exist, and Unknown Worlds asks players to disable them after each hotfix until mod makers update them.
