Romestead Mundus Cerialis, the co-op survival game's first seasonal event, ends on October 31, 2026. Since October 1, a ghostly spirit has been wandering Beartwigs' post-apocalyptic Roman world, asking for offerings in return for Strange Shards, which open a tough new challenge with four rewards. What is the Mundus Cerialis event in Romestead?

It's Beartwigs' first seasonal event, built to celebrate autumn in Sweden and the run-up to Halloween. It's based on a real Roman tradition: the Mundus Cerialis was a pit believed to be a gate to the underworld, opened three times a year in autumn so the spirits inside could walk among the living. In Romestead, a friendly spirit, the Ghostly Worshipper, appears in your town looking for offerings. But as Beartwigs teases, you haven't built a Mundus Cerialis, "so where is it?"

How do you start the Romestead Halloween event?

  1. Progress through the desert and defeat its bosses. According to the publicist, that includes the desert boss Pyzifax, and you'll need an established town.
  2. Wait a day. The friendly spirit appears in your town the next day.
  3. Talk to the spirit and bring it the offerings it asks for to earn Strange Shards.

You don't need a new world. Beartwigs strongly recommends end-game gear, because the challenge the shards unlock is tough.

What do Strange Shards do?

Strange Shards open the way to a challenging new encounter. According to the event information, those "well-equipped and fearless enough" can earn four special rewards, including new equipment and weapons with unique effects. Shards can only be earned during the event, but they keep working after it ends, and the items that start the challenge don't disappear, so the challenge stays replayable.

When does Mundus Cerialis end?

On October 31, 2026. On that day the Ghostly Worshipper "returns to the underworld for now". Beartwigs says the event will return next year "in full swing, with more rewards". The publicist also teases that the spirit "knows why it has returned" and that there may be more to it than meets the eye.

Is Romestead worth playing in 2026?

Romestead is a co-op action survival game set after a mythical fall of Ancient Rome, with a fantasy twist and a pixel art world. You rebuild a Roman settlement, carry heavy resources by hand or cart, recruit survivors as artisans, fight the walking dead at night and make offerings to wake the silent gods. It supports 1 to 8 players, scales its difficulty to the group, lets you host your own dedicated server, and is Steam Deck Verified. It's in Early Access on Steam for $13.99 / £11.99 / €13.99.

Is Romestead having connection problems?

Some players have reported repeated disconnects in multiplayer. Beartwigs recommends trying the 0.26.3-beta branch on Steam (saves work on both versions). Players have also had success hosting through IP with the Romestead Dedicated Server tool (default port 8050), using a server provider or a VPN. Beartwigs says it doesn't host any servers itself and is working on reconnecting you where you left off after a disconnect.

What's next for Romestead?

Beartwigs is working on the next major update, a new biome. It says it has built new enemies, attacks, environments and dungeons, plus the first boss, which is "starting to look pretty terrifying". A developer Q&A video is also on the way.

Who makes Romestead?

Romestead is developed by Beartwigs, a studio in Linköping, Sweden, and published by Three Friends. According to the publicist, Three Friends is a small publishing team that includes Mojang's first employee and the publisher who discovered Valheim, and it focuses on Swedish and Nordic developers.
