Is Over the Top: WWI coming to PS5 or Xbox?

At the time of writing, Over the Top: WWI is a PC exclusive. Flying Squirrel Entertainment and publisher GG Publishing have not announced PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions, and there's no console release date. Many console players have asked for one, especially as the game's huge battles have grown in popularity, but nothing has been confirmed.

If a console version is announced, we'll update this article straight away. In the meantime, console players looking for a World War One shooter can try Verdun or Tannenberg, which are both on PS5 and Xbox.

Who made Over the Top: WWI?

Over the Top: WWI is made by Flying Squirrel Entertainment, a small European studio of four developers with a strong track record in historical multiplayer games. The team began with the Mount & Musket mod for Mount & Blade: Warband, which led to the official Napoleonic Wars expansion, and went on to make Holdfast: Nations at War and Battle Cry of Freedom. The developers are also historical reenactors, which shows in the game's uniforms, weapons and battlefields.

The game is published by GG Publishing.

What kind of game is Over the Top: WWI?

Over the Top: WWI is a large-scale multiplayer shooter set on the Western Front, playable in first or third person. Its defining feature is fully destructible terrain: artillery carves permanent craters, buildings collapse and engineers dig new trench lines, so the battlefield looks completely different by the end of a match.

Game modes

  • Multiplayer (100 vs 100): huge team battles with up to 200 players.
  • Single player and bot matches: every map and mode, with AI bots filling the servers.
  • Custom servers: host your own games with custom rules and maps.
  • Map editor and Steam Workshop: build maps and share them with the community.

Factions and classes

The base game includes France, Great Britain and Germany, with American forces added through the US Expeditionary Forces DLC. Each nation has eight classes: Rifleman, Engineer, Flamethrower, Officer, Sniper, Support, Medic and Heavy Weapons. Officers can call in artillery, air support, poison gas and creeping barrages, while Engineers dig trenches and build fortifications.

Vehicles, weapons and the battlefield

  • Tanks that carry up to 11 crew, aircraft for dogfights and ground attacks, and artillery that permanently reshapes the map.
  • Over 50 historical weapons, including bolt-action rifles, revolvers, machine guns, flamethrowers, grenades and melee weapons.
  • Dynamic weather, wind, day and night and seasons that change visibility and tactics.
  • Proximity voice chat, which has become one of the game's most-loved features for the chaos and comedy it creates.
  • Friendly fire, so officers have to think twice before calling in an airstrike.

Over the Top: WWI maps

The game launched with 12 handcrafted maps inspired by real Western Front locations, from open no man's land and deep trench networks to villages, forests and bunker systems. More maps are being added in updates.

Over the Top: WWI Steam reviews and player count

Over the Top: WWI was a surprise hit when it launched on March 6, 2026. It hit Very Positive on Steam within days and peaked at over 5,500 concurrent players in its launch week. It has kept that Very Positive rating since, with around 83% of more than 7,600 reviews positive.

Players regularly praise the destructible terrain and trench digging, the chaos of 200-player battles, the proximity chat and the historical detail. The most common complaints are early bugs, the need for more maps and some balance issues.

How does Over the Top: WWI compare to other WW1 games?

  • Verdun, Tannenberg and Isonzo (Blackmill Games): the closest rivals, and available on console, but with much smaller battles and no destructible terrain.
  • Battlefield 1: a far bigger AAA production, but Over the Top: WWI offers deeper tactics, more authentic history and a much lower price.

Who should buy Over the Top: WWI?

If you love large-scale multiplayer shooters, historical warfare and tactical team play, it's an easy recommendation, especially for fans of Battlefield 1, Verdun, Holdfast: Nations at War and Battle Cry of Freedom. Players who want a fast, arcade-style shooter may find the teamwork and pace more demanding.

Final verdict: is Over the Top: WWI worth buying?

Over the Top: WWI is one of the most ambitious indie shooters of 2026. For under $20, it delivers 200-player battles, fully destructible battlefields and a level of historical detail no other WW1 game can match, all from a team of just four developers. A few rough edges and the lack of a console version hold it back, but on PC it comes highly recommended.
