When is the Rules of Engagement: The Grey State release date?

There's no release date or release window yet. The Steam page lists the game as "To be announced". Grey State Studio has asked players to wishlist it and join its Discord for playtest news. Its first dev blog, published on 30 July 2026, promised more to share "next month". We'll add the release date to this article and our Release Radar as soon as it's announced.

Is Rules of Engagement: The Grey State free to play?

Yes. The Steam page lists the game as Free to Play. Grey State Studio hasn't explained its monetisation yet.

What is Rules of Engagement: The Grey State?

The game is set in a "Horrorverse" where a strange parallel dimension, the Grey State, is bleeding into our world. The Grey State resembles reality "but never quite follows the same rules": physics, time and even life itself can drift out of alignment. You play as a Strider, an operative sent in by the Grey State Agency (GSA), with help from Ada, the GSA's AI assistant. As the game's own tagline puts it: "This isn't about saving the world. It's just business."

How does the co-op PvE mode work?

Revealed on 30 July 2026, the co-op PvE mode sends squads of three to Boreas Isle, a remote, rugged island in Northern Europe. Creatures from the Grey State arrived with a mist called the Haze and are nesting and multiplying across the island. Your job is to hold the line. Here's what Grey State Studio has shown:

  • Heavy firepower: besides guns, you can bring Special Equipment such as a flamethrower to hold back hordes or a recoilless rifle for heavily armoured creatures. Squads should pick complementary loadouts.
  • Tactical Support: call in high-explosive shells to blast a path or incendiary rockets to set the ground on fire.
  • Smart enemies: creatures are fast, hunt in packs and flank, so squads need to watch each other's backs.
  • Changing missions: terrain, objectives and enemy activity vary each time, so a route that worked before may not exist next time.
  • Doors into the Grey State: during an operation, a door may appear where none should exist. Step through it, grab what you can and get out.

What's inside the Grey State?

The studio's dev blog lists "provisional guidelines" for surviving the Grey State, compiled from Striders who made it back. They give a feel for its horror:

  1. Do not turn your back on the Bandaged Man.
  2. Gravity anomalies are normal.
  3. If black liquid begins seeping from the walls, evacuate immediately.
  4. If you hear movement above you, do not look up.
  5. Do not look directly into any camera.
  6. If the spotlight finds you, close your eyes.
  7. If you see a household appliance moving on its own, run.

The PvE trailer also shows a washing machine walking on four legs, a glowing mass of fused metal and an ancient mechanism hidden among ruins.

How does PvP work?

The squad-based PvP mode was the first to be revealed, in 2025. Squads of three venture into the Grey State, hunt, grow stronger and compete with rival squads for The Vertex, then try to extract alive. PvE and PvP are two separate modes set in the same Horrorverse, so you can choose which to play.

Is there a Rules of Engagement: The Grey State playtest?

Grey State Studio says playtest information is shared on its official Discord, along with events and chances to talk to the developers. No public playtest dates have been announced on Steam yet.
