The Terrible Lizards release date is Thursday, 29 October 2026. WDR Studios' first-person horror parkour game launches that day on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, just in time for Halloween, and a free demo is already out on Steam.

Terrible Lizards traps you inside Dalton's Dinos, a Route 66 dinosaur attraction in 1992 New Mexico, where something monstrous lives under the exhibits. You can't fight back: you run, jump, climb, wall run and slide to stay alive. Here's everything the developers have officially confirmed so far: the release date and unlock time, platforms, price, the demo, the story, the creatures, who's making it and the PC system requirements.

What time does Terrible Lizards come out in the UK?

In the UK, Terrible Lizards unlocks at 5pm GMT on Thursday 29 October 2026, according to the UK PlayStation Store. The clocks go back on 25 October, so that's GMT, not BST. WDR Studios hasn't confirmed separate times for Steam and Xbox, and no UK price has been announced on any store yet, but you can play the free demo on Steam now.

When is the Terrible Lizards release date?

Terrible Lizards comes out on 29 October 2026. WDR Studios announced the date on Steam on 28 August 2026, alongside a new trailer: "Terrible Lizards arrives on PC, Xbox Series and PS5 on 29 October!" The same date is on the game's Steam page, the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store, so all three platforms launch on the same day.

It's a fitting slot for a horror game: the Terrible Lizards release date falls two days before Halloween.

What time does Terrible Lizards unlock?

The UK PlayStation Store lists Terrible Lizards as releasing on 29/10/2026 at 17:00 GMT. That works out as:

  • UK: 5pm GMT, Thursday 29 October
  • US East Coast: 1pm EDT, Thursday 29 October
  • US West Coast: 10am PDT, Thursday 29 October
  • Central Europe: 6pm CET, Thursday 29 October

WDR Studios hasn't posted a separate unlock time for Steam or Xbox yet. Simultaneous launches usually unlock at the same moment everywhere, but treat the PlayStation time as a guide for PC and Xbox until the studio confirms it. We'll update this article if it does.

Is Terrible Lizards coming to PS5 and Xbox?

Yes. Terrible Lizards launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on the same day as PC: the Terrible Lizards release date is the same on every platform. Both console store pages are live and you can wishlist the game on them now. The Microsoft Store listing shows Xbox Play Anywhere, so buying it on the Microsoft Store should cover both Xbox and Windows PC.

There's no PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch version announced, and the Steam page lists Windows only (no Mac or Linux).

Is Terrible Lizards on Game Pass?

Nothing has been announced. The game was playable on the Xbox booth at Gamescom 2026, but neither WDR Studios nor Xbox has said Terrible Lizards is coming to Game Pass. We'll update this if that changes.

How much is Terrible Lizards?

The Terrible Lizards price hasn't been announced yet. None of the three stores lists a price, and pre-orders aren't open. Stores usually show the price close to launch, so expect it in the final weeks before the Terrible Lizards release date. In the meantime, the best way to try it is the free demo.

Is there a Terrible Lizards demo?

Yes. The free Terrible Lizards demo is out now on Steam. It launched on 24 September 2026 and lets you explore an early part of Dalton's Dinos, "meet a Paleo Pal" and "say hello to a terrible lizard". It comes in two parts:

  • Story Demo: introduces the world, the attraction and the mystery.
  • Gameplay Demo: unlocks after you finish the first part, with more focus on first-person platforming and fast movement.

WDR has patched the demo quickly since launch:

  • v0.9.44 (25 September): fixes for the first wave of bug reports, including a theatre softlock, double mantling, toggle sprint and several collision problems. The studio said it received 24 bug reports in the first 24 hours.
  • v0.9.45 (26 September): graphics presets (Low, Medium, High, Epic and Steam Deck), plus VSync, on by default.
  • v0.9.51 (1 October): a new Accessibility option that turns off hints. It changes some environment pieces and colours and makes Jordan, the protagonist, talk less, for a more immersive (and harder) run.

WDR also notes that the demo can crash on graphics cards with 4GB of VRAM or less, and suggests using the DX11 launch option if that happens. That's worth knowing before you download the full game too.

What is Terrible Lizards about?

It's 1992, and your car has died miles from anywhere, outside Dalton's Dinos, a once-unmissable Route 66 roadside attraction baking under the New Mexico sun. The staff have vanished. Inside, you find a telephone, and a mysterious voice on the line begs you to help find a missing child. There are no mobile phones, no rideshares and no help coming, and you soon find you're not alone.

The deeper you go, the clearer it becomes that the attraction is hiding something below it. Much of the game takes place underground, in caves beneath the park. You uncover the story through tapes, notes and recordings scattered around Dalton's Dinos, and you play as Jordan, who talks you through what's happening as you explore.

How does the Terrible Lizards gameplay work?

Terrible Lizards is a first-person horror platformer built around movement. Creatures stalk the attraction, shambling and charging after you, and your only answer is to keep moving: run, jump, climb, wall run, bounce, slide, swing and mantle. There are no weapons, so you outsmart and outmanoeuvre your pursuers instead of fighting them.

In Dalton's Devlogs #2, John of JT Music explained the thinking behind it. The team wanted the movement to feel "fun every second you're holding the controller", instead of the slow walking and fetch quests common in horror. Mirror's Edge and Dying Light are named as proof that first-person movement can feel great, and classic 2D platformers like Donkey Kong Country as the inspiration for the rhythm and flow. The core movement came first: the earliest version was just grey-box obstacle courses in Unreal, built to check the running, jumping, sliding and swinging were fun before any art or story existed.

The developers have also explained how they've made it approachable:

  • Aerial control: you can adjust yourself mid-jump, which helps newer players and lets experienced ones optimise routes.
  • Forgiving mantling: fall just short of a ledge and you'll often still grab it, while skilled players can use it to find shortcuts.
  • Generous checkpoints: once you've beaten a section, the game keeps the momentum going rather than making you replay it repeatedly.

In tone, the studio says it's "closer to Jurassic Park than psychological horror": tension and dread, but the goal is to leave a chase feeling exhilarated as well as relieved.

What are the monsters in Terrible Lizards?

There are two kinds of threat at Dalton's Dinos: the park's mascots and the dinosaurs themselves.

The Paleo Pals are the attraction's costumed mascots. WDR says they're an homage to Five Nights at Freddy's, but also designed as suits people could really have worn in the 90s. The Bronto mascot, Benji, has a viewing hole at the base of its neck to pull off the long-necked look.

The creatures are "more than just dinosaurs". The team wanted horror twists on familiar dinosaurs, and because so much of the game happens underground, they're also cave-dwelling beasts. The principal creature designs are by RJ Palmer, who gave the studio two to four concepts per monster before each final design was picked. In the devlogs and a design video, the studio has named:

  • The Hybrid: a Dilophosaurus hybrid, whose ribcage takes its porous texture from a coral reef skeleton. RJ Palmer cites the skull-faced creatures from The Void and the newborn from Alien: Resurrection as inspirations.
  • The Bronto monster: "a fun and different take on the species".
  • The Allo monster: an Allosaurus, described as "just cool and lethal", and the developers' own pick for favourite dinosaur.
  • Pterry: an extra creature added midway through production.

Because the game is set in 1992, the dinosaurs are deliberately the scaly, pre-feathers versions most people knew then, presented "from a 1990s perspective". Around ten people worked on each creature from concept to finished, animated monster.

Who is making Terrible Lizards?

Terrible Lizards is developed by WDR Studios, founded by the team behind JT Music, who've spent more than a decade making songs inspired by video games, many of them horror and mascot-horror games. It's the studio's first game, and the first commercial game for almost everyone on the team. WDR described itself in September as "a fairly small team (only about 6 active developers currently)".

It's published by Digital Pajamas and Behaviour Interactive, the studio behind Dead by Daylight. The game was first playable at the PAX Rising Showcase at PAX West 2025, its cinematic teaser premiered on Game Theory's livestream in December 2025, and it returned as a playable demo on the Xbox booth at Gamescom 2026.

The soundtrack leans on a John Williams-style theme for the park itself, recorded with a well-worn cassette tape warble, before shifting to dissonant orchestral and synth dread underground. Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and Godzilla are named as influences. The game is fully voiced in English, with subtitles in French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Simplified Chinese.

What are the Terrible Lizards PC system requirements?

These are the official requirements from the Steam page. Both tiers need a 64-bit processor and operating system, and 25GB of storage.

MinimumRecommended
OSWindows 10Windows 11
ProcessorIntel Core i5-6400 / AMD Ryzen 3 1200Intel Core i3-10100F / AMD Ryzen 3 3100

GraphicsNVIDIA GTX 1050 2GB / AMD RX 560 2GBNVIDIA RTX 2080 / AMD RX 6800 XT
DirectXVersion 11Version 12
Storage25GB25GB

The minimum spec lists 2GB graphics cards, but WDR has warned that the demo can crash on cards with 4GB of VRAM or less (the DX11 launch option is the suggested fix), so lower-end PCs may need some tweaking. The game has full controller support and Steam Achievements.

Can you play Terrible Lizards on Steam Deck?

Valve hasn't rated Terrible Lizards for Steam Deck yet, but the developers clearly have it in mind: since demo update v0.9.45, there's a dedicated Steam Deck graphics preset. Trying the free demo on your Deck is the best way to check before launch.

Is Terrible Lizards multiplayer or co-op?

No. Terrible Lizards is a single-player game. The Steam page lists single-player only, with no co-op or online modes.
