When is the METRO 2039 release date?

METRO 2039 releases on 4 February 2027. 4A Games announced the date alongside the first console gameplay in Sony's State of Play on 3 September 2026, and then showed it again at Gamescom. The studio notes that the game arrives on February 5 in some territories, including Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

When the game was first revealed on 16 April 2026, 4A Games described it as "coming this winter", and the June gameplay reveal narrowed that down to February 2027. So far the METRO 2039 release date has held. An exact unlock time hasn't been announced yet; we'll add it here when it is.

What platforms is METRO 2039 on?

According to Deep Silver's official FAQ, METRO 2039 launches simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. On PC you can buy it on Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC.

4A Games has confirmed a 60FPS Performance Mode with ray tracing at launch on Xbox Series X, PS5 and PS5 Pro. The first console footage, shown in State of Play, was captured on a PS5 Pro at 60FPS in Performance Mode. More details on modes and specs for each version are promised in the run-up to launch.

Is METRO 2039 coming to PS4 or Xbox One?

No. The official platform list is PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC only. 4A Games says METRO 2039 is the first game in the series built from the ground up for ray tracing.

What is the METRO 2039 story?

METRO 2039 takes place a quarter of a century after nuclear war. The last survivors have spent 25 years locked in bitter conflict in the Metro tunnels beneath the poisoned city of Moscow. Now they have been united under a single leader: Hunter, the fanatical Spartan, whose Novoreich regime rules through propaganda and fear and is waging a new war for the surface against a dark and terrifying enemy.

You play as the Stranger, a reclusive figure living in the wilderness beyond the city who is haunted by violent waking nightmares. When the ghosts of his past force him out of exile, he has to make a harrowing journey into the ruins of Moscow and down into the Metro. 4A Games calls it the darkest story it has ever told.

Series fans will recognise Hunter: he's the first Spartan from the original books and games, and his image now looms over the Metro on posters, propaganda screens and statues.

Do I need to play the other Metro games first?

No. Deep Silver's FAQ says METRO 2039 is a new, original story written by 4A Games in collaboration with author Dmitry Glukhovsky, who wrote the Metro novels. It isn't based on a specific book, and it's designed as a jumping-on point for new players.

What is METRO 2039 gameplay like?

METRO 2039 is a single-player story FPS that mixes exploration, survival, combat and stealth, the series' trademark blend of immersion, survival, stealth, violence and horror. From the official trailers and posts so far:

  • You fight both below ground in the tunnels and above ground in the ruins of Moscow, the wildlands outside the city and struggling station communities.
  • The gameplay reveal introduced a new weapon, the Shatun, along with new items and new mutant variants.
  • 4A Games has teased new ways to explore and use the environment.
  • It runs on the studio's own 4A Engine and is the first Metro built from the ground up for ray tracing.

The Steam page lists single-player only, so there's no multiplayer mode announced.

Is there a METRO 2039 Collector's Edition?

Yes. The METRO 2039 Collector's Edition is built around a wearable replica of the Stranger's battle-scarred Spartan helmet, made from the in-game 3D model, with a hinged visor and integrated gas mask details. 4A Games says the helmet will only be available in the Collector's Edition. The rest of the contents and the price haven't been revealed.

When do METRO 2039 pre-orders open, and how much is it?

Pre-orders, including for the Collector's Edition, open later this year, according to 4A Games. The price of the standard game and any other editions hasn't been announced. Deep Silver runs a Collector's Edition mailing list for anyone who wants to know when pre-orders go live. For now you can wishlist the game on Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox, and we'll add prices here as soon as they're confirmed ahead of the METRO 2039 release date.

METRO 2039 PC system requirements

Not announced yet. The Steam page currently says only that a 64-bit processor and operating system are required. 4A Games has promised more on "the technology, specs and different modes" before launch, and we'll add the full table here when it's published.

  • It passed 1 million Steam wishlists within two weeks of its April 2026 reveal.
  • It's nominated for Most Wanted at the Golden Joystick Awards 2026.
  • The Metro series has now sold more than 50 million copies since Metro 2033 in 2010.

How to catch up before METRO 2039

You don't need to play the older games before the METRO 2039 release date, but if you want to, a free next-gen update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux arrives in October 2026. It adds native PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S versions, 4K textures, improved animation and audio, and a batch of community-requested fixes. It's free for anyone who already owns the Redux games.
