How to Breed Axolotls in Minecraft: Blue Axolotl Odds, Cooldowns and Tips

To breed axolotls in Minecraft, feed two adult axolotls a bucket of tropical fish each. Hearts appear, and a baby axolotl spawns. Babies usually take one parent's color, but there's a 1 in 1,200 chance of the rare blue axolotl, which never spawns naturally. Where do you find axolotls?

Axolotls spawn underwater in Lush Caves, in groups of four to six, where there's a clay block less than five blocks below the water. Look for pools in lush caves with clay on the bottom. Four colors spawn naturally: pink (leucistic), brown, gold and cyan.

How do you catch an axolotl?

Use a water bucket on it to scoop it up, then release it in your own pool. Axolotls you release from a bucket won't despawn. You can also put them on a lead. They aren't hostile and can't be tamed in the usual way.

How do you breed axolotls step by step?

1. Build a small pool near your base, at least two blocks deep.
2. Bring in two adult axolotls.
3. Catch tropical fish with a water bucket (they swim in warm oceans).
4. Use a bucket of tropical fish on each axolotl. Hearts appear and a baby spawns.
5. Wait out the cooldown (5 minutes on Java, 1 minute on Bedrock) and repeat.

Each breeding also gives you 1 to 7 experience.

How do you get a blue axolotl?

Only by breeding. Each baby has a 1 in 1,200 (about 0.083%) chance of being blue. Otherwise it copies one parent's color at random. Keep breeding, and use the Bedrock Edition's shorter cooldown if you can.

How do axolotls help you?

Axolotls attack hostile water mobs like drowned and guardians. If you kill a mob that's fighting an axolotl, you get Regeneration I for five seconds per axolotl in the fight, and your Mining Fatigue is removed, which is handy at ocean monuments. When hurt, they can play dead to regenerate, and hostile mobs ignore them while they do.

Can axolotls live out of water?

Only briefly. They can wander up to about nine blocks from water if there's deep water nearby to return to, but if they can't get back, they'll die after about five minutes on land. Rain doesn't help them, and they won't use water that's only one block deep.
