The Long Dark Iron Road is out now. Hinterland's train-powered survival expansion launched in Steam Early Access on Tuesday 27 October 2026, at 11am Pacific time, and costs £20.29 / $24.99 / €24.49. Its 10% launch discount ended on 3 November. It takes you to Cauldron Island, a lost island chain with a century-old train at the heart of the sandbox, and the first island and its stretch of track are open now.

This isn't BLACKFROST, the sequel Hinterland is also working on. Iron Road is paid DLC for the original game's Survival Mode, so you need The Long Dark to play it. Here's everything Hinterland has confirmed at launch: the price and the planned price rises, what's in Early Access on day one, whether your old saves work, the console plans and the roadmap.

Is The Long Dark: Iron Road out now?

Yes. Iron Road went live on Steam on 27 October 2026 at 11am Pacific time, which was 6pm GMT in the UK and 7pm CET in central Europe. Hinterland premiered the launch trailer on its YouTube channel half an hour before the unlock and posted "AVAILABLE NOW!" on Steam a couple of minutes before 6pm GMT.

Hinterland says the Iron Road team is watching the game and its feedback channels from launch day onwards and will hotfix problems as quickly as possible. Bug reports and feedback go to separate Iron Road subforums on the official Hinterland Forums and on Steam. On launch evening, Iron Road was rated Positive on Steam, with 90% of its first 44 user reviews positive.

What is The Long Dark: Iron Road?

Iron Road is a Survival Expansion for The Long Dark's Survival Mode. Hinterland's founder Raphael van Lierop says the team had so much fun building the train in WINTERMUTE's Episode Five, and players liked it so much, that the studio built a whole DLC around train gameplay.

The setting is Cauldron Island, a flooded volcanic caldera that forms an archipelago of five islands named after the daughters of an industrialist, Hamish McLeod: Anna, Stella, Freya, Morag and Skye. A century ago McLeod tried to build an empire on whale-oil powered technology. That history was erased, and you follow the trail of his great-granddaughter, Alice McLeod, to find out what went wrong.

Hinterland had first planned Iron Road like TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY, released in parts over time. After talking to Valve, it decided to release it as Early Access DLC instead.

How does the train work in Iron Road?

The Prototype Train has been hidden for a hundred years. You find it, bring it back to life and use it to travel deep along the island chain. Hinterland calls it "part transportation, part mobile shelter", so it's both your vehicle and a moving base.

  • Repair Bays unlock train upgrades: engine improvements, comforts that make the train a better base, and upgrades that open new parts of the world.
  • Cosmetics let you personalise the cabin and exterior.
  • The track is in bad shape: expect broken and electrified track, deep snow drifts, fallen trees, broken switches, rockfalls and avalanches, plus puzzle gates and Aurora gates.
  • Fuel and water stations, switches and train sheds sit along the line.

Hinterland's warning is clear: keep the train running and protect it, because once you're deep in Cauldron Island, it's the only way home. The train only works on Cauldron Island.

How do you get to Cauldron Island?

An autopilot boat called the Fulmar carries you from Desolation Point on Great Bear Island to Port Remnant on Cauldron Island. You can bring useful gear back to Great Bear Island in the base game, and the Fulmar waits at Desolation Point when you want to return. Hinterland notes that travel "isn't free" and favours the prepared.

What's in Iron Road at Early Access launch?

Hinterland's launch post and Early Access roadmap list what's in the game from day one:

  • Anna Island, the first of the five islands, with the first 30 kilometres of track, out of more than 100 kilometres planned. (Before launch, the official site said "over 30 kilometres" and the Steam page "nearly 30".)
  • The Fulmar autopilot boat between Desolation Point on Great Bear Island and Port Remnant on Cauldron Island.
  • The Prototype Train, forgotten for a century, which you restore, repair and maintain, plus train repair sheds, fuel and water stations and switches.
  • Wax cylinders scattered across the landscape, with clues to the mystery, and the Wax Cylinder Player to hear them.
  • The Portable Whale-Oil Heater, which you can take back to Great Bear Island for your survival runs there.

As in TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY, light narrative missions and audio collectibles guide you across the island inside the survival sandbox. The deeper you travel, the stronger the Aurora effects become. Hinterland describes this as a preview of the post-WINTERMUTE, Aurora-changed world.

Can you use an existing save with Iron Road?

Yes. Hinterland says your current favourite Survival Mode save should work with Iron Road without compatibility issues, and there's no need to start a new one. You'll find the Fulmar at Desolation Point and can travel back and forth to Cauldron Island.

There's a catch: this is Early Access DLC, so there's some risk to your save. Hinterland's own advice is that if you have a long-running save you'd be heartbroken to lose, start Iron Road on a fresh save until you're confident the build is stable.

What's on the Iron Road Early Access roadmap?

Hinterland expects Iron Road's Early Access to run for around 18–24 months. Its roadmap lists what's planned along the way (it's "aspirational", not a promise):

  • The other four islands (Stella, Freya, Morag and Skye), linked by hydraulic train bridges that unlock over time, and 100km+ of track in total.
  • Train upgrades and cosmetics.
  • New tools: Enhanced Gun Oil, a Harpoon for seal hunting, a whale oil lamp and a flensing knife.
  • New food and wildlife: canned whale meat, new recipes, new fish, seals and seabirds.
  • New clothing: Whaler's Coat and Hat, Sealskin Mittens and Boots, Mariner's Mitts and an Islander Sweater.
  • Safehouse customisation items themed on 1920s and 1930s whaling stations, which you can take back to Great Bear.
  • New Aurora hazards.

Many of these items can be used in the base game too. Hinterland is aiming for monthly small updates and quarterly large updates, with hotfixes in between. A large update would be something like a new island or a major train system.

Bigger changes may go to an Experimental Branch first, so players who opt in can test them early. Hinterland says Release and Experimental saves are kept apart, so Experimental builds can't break your main saves, and it will explain how to join closer to the first update. There were no Survival Mode fixes in the launch build; Hinterland plans a dev diary after launch on its plans for maintaining and updating the base game.

Is The Long Dark: Iron Road on PS5, Xbox or Switch?

Not yet, and not soon. Iron Road is on Steam only, where it lists Windows, Mac and Linux. Hinterland says the team is focused on the Steam version because it can update and hotfix it fastest, without waiting on console certification.

Hinterland would like to bring Iron Road to consoles eventually and will talk to the console platforms about how well they can support its Early Access approach. Its current guess is that the focus stays on Steam for at least the first half of 2027, with a possible console release later in 2027, but it stresses that this is just a guess and not a commitment. We'll update this if a date is announced.

How much is The Long Dark: Iron Road?

Iron Road costs £20.29 / $24.99 / €24.49 on Steam. Its 10% launch discount ended on 3 November. One purchase covers everything at launch plus all the updates released during Early Access.

The price won't stay there. Hinterland plans to raise it by $5 to $29.99 around the midway point of the roadmap, and by another $5 to $34.99 when Iron Road reaches 1.0 (it gave US dollar prices only). It says this reflects planned price increases across The Long Dark's products, so the best time to buy is "always now". Hinterland is also upfront that if you don't like paying for unfinished games, you should wait until Early Access is over.

You'll need The Long Dark to play it; the base game costs £15.99 / $19.99 on Steam.

Is Iron Road the same as BLACKFROST?

No. BLACKFROST: The Long Dark 2 is Hinterland's separate sequel, and its Early Access was pushed to 2027. Iron Road is an expansion for the first game.
