Destiny 2 Motes of Light: How to Get Them and What to Use Them For

Motes of Light in Destiny 2 are the collectibles you need for the exotic Khvostov 7G-0X auto rifle in The Pale Heart, the destination added by The Final Shape expansion. You need 17 Motes of Light: 9 from Overthrow bosses and 8 from Visions of the Traveler. Once you have them all, you can open the hidden exotic Khvostov chest. Here's where every one comes from and what to do with them.

What do you use Motes of Light for in Destiny 2?

You use Motes of Light to unlock the exotic Khvostov 7G-0X. You don't spend them one at a time: once you've collected all 17, they come together as a Mote of Primordial Light, which, along with the Visions of the Traveler, opens the final exotic chest. Before you start, you need to have unlocked the Legendary version of Khvostov.

How do you get Motes of Light from Overthrow?

Each of the nine Overthrow bosses in The Pale Heart drops one Mote of Light the first time you defeat it. To reach a boss, fully charge an Overthrow activity in that region (to level 4). There are three bosses in each region:

• The Landing: Ir Okmarr, Mharuk and Nolakh.
• The Blooming: Kholon, Koftiks and Voxelos.
• The Impasse: Araaxen, Rhaska and Rhuna.

Each Mote drops as a physical item from the boss, so make sure you pick it up. Beating the same boss again won't give you another Mote, so you'll need to run Overthrow at least three times in each region to see all nine. The Pale Heart Triumphs let you track which bosses you've already beaten.

Where are the Visions of the Traveler?

The other 8 Motes of Light come from the eight hidden Visions of the Traveler, glowing orbs tucked away around The Pale Heart. Each one you collect gives you a Mote, and finding them all also unlocks the Visionary Triumph. You can collect them before or after the Overthrow bosses.

Where is the exotic Khvostov chest?

With all 17 Motes, head to The Pale Heart's version of the old Tower, to the spot where the Speaker stood in the original Destiny. Place each Vision of the Traveler on the pedestals there to make the chest appear, then open it to claim the exotic Khvostov 7G-0X. If you don't get a button prompt straight away, walk around the chest until it appears.

Tips for collecting Motes of Light

• Track the Triumphs: the Pale Heart Triumphs show which Overthrow bosses you've beaten, so you don't repeat the wrong ones.
• Always grab the drop: each Mote is a physical item that drops from the boss.
• Group up: Overthrow is a public activity, so other Guardians can help you charge it faster.
• If a boss seems bugged: when The Final Shape launched, players reported a bugged Overthrow boss and a Taken Servitor issue that could stop the final Mote dropping. Bungie fixed it, but if you hit something similar, check Bungie's help channels.
