Is Grain Rot on PS5 or Xbox?

No. Grain Rot is only available on Windows PC through Steam, and Beck & Branch Games hasn't announced PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Nintendo Switch versions. None of the developer's launch posts, patch notes or roadmap mention consoles.

The game does now have full gamepad support on PC, and recent patches have improved controller navigation, so it plays well with a pad. That doesn't mean a console version is in development, though. If one is announced, we'll update this article straight away.

Grain Rot roadmap: what's the next update?

A few days after launch, the developers shared their post-launch roadmap. Here's how it has played out so far:

  • August (done): a public server browser, password-protected servers, lobby privacy and player-limit settings, kick and ban controls, grief protection, a new Boing vessel and seven new constructs.
  • September (done): Grain Rot 1.1 arrived on 24 September with Expedition mode, the new Rainbow Ward biome, 25 Expedition-only colours and patterns, and five save slots. Follow-up patches added the Corrupted Builder enemy, a dungeon run timer and many fixes.
  • October (next): the Halloween Update, which the developers say will open the third floor of the Outpost and introduce a new questline. An exact date hasn't been announced yet.

What is Grain Rot Expedition mode?

Expedition mode is a hardcore, permadeath way to play that arrived in Grain Rot 1.1. Frost damages you as you explore, a furnace has to be kept fed to survive, and upgrades come from gumballs you collect along the way. It's designed for groups who have mastered the main game and want a tougher, higher-stakes challenge, and it comes with exclusive cosmetic patterns and colours to show off.

What is Grain Rot?

Grain Rot is a first-person co-op horror extraction builder set in a burnt, hostile wasteland. Each expedition starts at the Outpost. From there, you ride a cursed elevator down into the Deep Layers, procedurally shifting ruins full of loot, furniture, survivors and hostile Corrupted vessels. The goal is to grab anything valuable and get back to the elevator before your team is wiped out.

Anything you bring back helps rebuild the Outpost, unlocking upgrades, constructs and facilities that make the next descent a little more survivable. Unwanted junk can be fed into the Grinder for gold.

Living Sparks and wooden vessels

Grain Rot's standout idea is that you aren't a person at all. You're a Living Spark inhabiting a fragile wooden vessel, and vessels can splinter, break apart or catch fire. When yours is destroyed, your Spark escapes and has a short time to find another body to possess before it fades away completely.

That means dying doesn't always end your run. You can guide teammates as a Spark, then jump into a new vessel with different abilities, which can change how your group approaches the rest of the expedition. If every vessel is destroyed and no Spark finds a new host, the loot is lost.

Co-op chaos, tactical carpentry and the Outpost

Grain Rot is built for groups making their own trouble. You can dropkick enemies, knock teammates' Sparks out of their bodies, and drag furniture through tight corridors while monsters close in. Its "tactical carpentry" lets you rip objects out of the world to use as cover, block doorways or carry home as loot.

Back at base, recovered materials rebuild and expand the Outpost, unlocking interactive furniture, character upgrades, new constructs, rescued survivors and machines for enchanting and repairing gear. The Halloween update will add a third Outpost floor on top of the second floor that arrived at launch.

How many players can play Grain Rot?

Grain Rot supports single-player and online co-op. The developers haven't published a fixed maximum in the Steam store listing, but hosts can now set a player limit, choose friends-only, invite-only or password-protected lobbies, and list games in the public server browser. Kick and ban controls and per-player grief protection help keep public games under control.

Can you play Grain Rot solo?

Yes. Grain Rot can be played entirely solo. After the demo, the developers said they didn't want it to feel "unnecessarily punishing, especially for solo players and smaller groups", and balanced it with that in mind. It's at its chaotic best with friends, though, as carrying loot and recovering teammates is much easier with a group.

Does Grain Rot use AI?

Grain Rot's Steam store page doesn't currently show an AI-generated content disclosure, and the developers haven't mentioned generative AI in any of their announcements. When we first covered the game in July 2026, the store page carried a disclosure saying generative AI was used for the voice-over of a small number of characters, but that disclosure is no longer displayed. If AI use matters to you, check the Steam page before buying, as developers can update these disclosures.

Is Grain Rot worth buying?

For £8.49 / $9.99, Grain Rot is an easy recommendation if you enjoy chaotic co-op horror like Lethal Company or R.E.P.O. but want deeper progression. Players clearly agree: it has passed 250,000 players and holds a Very Positive rating on Steam, and the developers have shipped regular patches and a major content update in its first two months. With the Halloween update and a third Outpost floor on the way, now is a good time to jump in.
