Frostpunk 2 stuttering usually comes down to three things: running the game from a hard drive instead of an SSD, out-of-date graphics drivers, or settings that are too high for your PC late in a game, when your city is huge. 11 bit studios has fixed a lot of performance problems since launch, so the first step is making sure you're on the latest version. Here's how to stop Frostpunk 2 lagging, in the order most likely to help.

Why is Frostpunk 2 stuttering?

Frostpunk 2 streams a lot of data as your city grows, which is why 11 bit studios lists "SSD required" in both the minimum and recommended PC specs. On a hard drive, the game can hitch whenever it loads new assets, during cutscenes and when you move the camera quickly. Other common causes are old graphics drivers, which the game now warns you about at startup, and settings that are too demanding once your city reaches the late game.

1. Install Frostpunk 2 on an SSD

This is the single biggest fix. If Frostpunk 2 is on a hard drive, move it: in Steam, right-click the game, choose Properties → Installed Files → Move install folder, and pick a library on an SSD. It needs around 30GB of space.

2. Update your graphics drivers

11 bit studios added a pop-up at startup in Hotfix 1.0.5 to warn players with outdated GPU drivers, because old drivers were behind many early crashes and slowdowns. Install the latest driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, then restart your PC.

3. Update the game and verify the files

Make sure you're on the latest patch. 11 bit studios focused on performance from the first week: hotfixes 1.0.2 to 1.0.5 tackled DirectX 12 problems and audio performance, and Patch 1.1.0 in October 2024 brought what the studio called large-scale optimisations and updated DirectX libraries. If you still get stutters, verify the game files in Steam (Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files) to replace anything corrupted.

4. Lower the right graphics settings

If you're near the minimum spec, drop the overall preset first, then lower the settings that hit performance hardest in a big city, such as shadows and effects. Late-game saves with sprawling districts are far more demanding than the early hours, so a preset that runs well at the start may need lowering later. If your GPU supports it, an upscaler can also give you a big boost.

5. Make sure the game uses your main graphics card

On laptops with integrated and dedicated graphics, Frostpunk 2 can end up on the weaker chip. Set it to your dedicated GPU in the NVIDIA Control Panel, AMD Software or Windows' Graphics settings (Settings → System → Display → Graphics, then choose High performance).

6. Don't push the object limit

In Hotfix 1.4.2, 11 bit studios explained how to raise the game's object limit to get past a specific crash, but warned that doing so "may lead to performance issues" because Frostpunk 2 wasn't designed or optimised past that point. If you changed it and now get stutters, put it back.

Does Frostpunk 2 run on Steam Deck and consoles?

11 bit studios confirmed in March 2025 that Frostpunk 2 is playable on Steam Deck, with Story Mode "fully stable" and solid performance, though Utopia Builder had some interface issues and late-game saves can take longer to load. The game also launched on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 18 September 2025, alongside Patch 1.4 with controller support on PC. It costs £37.99 / $44.99 on Steam.
