Bohemia Interactive Under Siege: DDoS Attack Brings Servers Down

Bohemia Interactive, the renowned developer behind Arma and DayZ, is facing a major crisis. A massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack has crippled their servers, leaving players unable to access their favorite games. Worse still, the attackers are holding the company to ransom, demanding a payment of  0.08 Bitcoin (ie $78,000) to stop the assault.

A Relentless Attack With No End in Sight

As reported by Gamepressure, the Bohemia DDoS Attack began several days ago, and there's no telling when it will end. The Russian hackers who go by the name Xiangjang_zhi, have taken credit for the disruption, claiming they will continue unless Bohemia meets their demands.

At the moment, all online services for Bohemia Interactive’s major titles are down or severely impacted:

  • Arma Reforger – The tactical shooter that serves as a bridge to Arma 4
  • DayZ – The open-world survival horror game, known for its intense PvP action
  • Arma 3 – The long-running military sandbox
  • Arma 2 & Arma: Armed Assault – Earlier entries in the beloved series
  • Ylands – A creative sandbox game
  • Take On Mars – A Mars exploration sim
  • Vigor – A free-to-play looter shooter
  • Silica – A hybrid FPS/RTS game

With Bohemia's servers being flooded with traffic, players are reporting widespread issues, from failing to log in to constant disconnections all due to the Bohemia DDoS Attack.

Why Is This Happening?

The motivation behind the Bohemia DDoS Attack remains unclear. Some speculate that the hackers could be politically driven, possibly reacting to the presence of community-hosted Arma servers simulating the war in Ukraine. Others believe it’s a standard ransom attack, with the perpetrators simply looking for a quick payout.

The gaming community is split between frustration and concern. While some are angry at being locked out of their favorite games, others are worried about what this could mean for online gaming security in general.

What is a DDoS Attack?

A DDoS attack works by overwhelming a server with so much traffic that it crashes. Imagine a restaurant where thousands of fake customers suddenly show up at once, preventing real diners from getting a seat.

Hackers often use botnets—networks of infected computers—to generate this traffic. The goal is to either cause chaos, take down services, or, in some cases, extort money from the target. In this instance, Bohemia Interactive is at the mercy of attackers who want a ransom in exchange for stopping the assault. Bohemia’s Response

Bohemia Interactive posted on their X account and has acknowledged the attack by informing the community about the "technical issues" but has yet to confirm whether they will pay the ransom or how long it might take to resolve the issue. Their teams are working to mitigate the damage, but they’ve offered no clear timeline for when servers will be back online.

For now, players are left in limbo. If you're trying to log in to Arma or DayZ and failing, you're not alone. The only thing to do is wait and see how Bohemia tackles this crisis.

The Bigger Picture

This attack highlights a growing problem in the gaming industry. As online multiplayer games become more connected, they also become more vulnerable to cyberattacks. Whether Bohemia fights back or pays up, this event is a stark reminder that even major game studios aren't safe from digital warfare.

For now, all we can do is hope that Bohemia finds a way to stop the attack—without giving in to the hackers.
