In a Steam post on 21 October 2026, the developer said Java-based mods are not officially supported, will break without warning when the game updates, and can potentially be used to create security vulnerabilities on your computer. Only Lua mods, the kind you install from the Steam Workshop, are officially supported.

The studio stresses this isn’t a ban and isn’t a judgement on any individual mod or modder. But if you use mods that need a special loader or files from outside the Workshop, here’s what you need to know.

Project Zomboid Java mods warning at a glance

Announced

21 October 2026, on Steam (“A Note on Java Mods and Modding”)

Officially supported

Lua mods only

Java mods

Allowed, but unsupported, may break with any update, and need “a different level of trust”

Bug reports

Must be reproducible in an un-modded save

Current version

Build 42.21 (Stable since 28 September 2026)

Price

£22.49 / $24.99 on Steam

What are Project Zomboid Java mods?

Project Zomboid itself is written in Java. Most mods are written in Lua, a scripting language the game is designed to load. Java mods are different: they change the game’s own code directly, using Java-based loaders and frameworks. That’s why some recent ones can change the game “at a fundamental level”. The Indie Stone hinted at mods offering “a whole new perspective” on how the game is played.

According to The Indie Stone, “in the vast majority of cases” Java mods need manual installation, ask you to download files from external websites, require a special loader, or otherwise involve more than clicking Subscribe on the Steam Workshop. That’s the easiest way to tell them apart.

Are Project Zomboid Java mods safe?

Not necessarily, and that’s the point of the warning. Because Java mods run outside “the confines” of Project Zomboid’s code, they can do far more than a Lua mod. The developer compared it to housework: if a Lua mod repaints your house and adds new wallpaper, a Java mod builds a new house nearby, possibly without you knowing, “and then have an additional, unseen back door”.

The Indie Stone is clear that this doesn’t mean all Java mods are malicious, or that installing one automatically puts your computer at risk. But you’re not just installing new game content: you’re letting third-party code run on your machine.

How to use Java mods more safely

The Indie Stone’s advice boils down to a few rules:

Only download mods from sources and authors you trust. This applies to every mod, whatever language it’s written in.

Look for open-source mods, or mods whose builds can be reproduced, so anyone can check that the code matches the download. The studio says this gives more transparency, but neither guarantees a mod is safe.

Be careful with mods from outside the Steam Workshop. The Workshop has systems to flag and report mods, and popular mods have been installed by many players, but that “absolutely is not a guarantee” of safety either.

Check whether the source code is public and the files can be independently verified before you install from another site.

The developer also asked Java modders to make their mods open source or reproducible.

Will Java mods break when Project Zomboid updates?

Yes, expect them to. The Indie Stone says the game’s internal code “is not a supported modding interface”. Any mod can break after an update, but Java mods rely on internal code that “will always change as the game develops”, so updates will break them “without warning”. The studio says it can’t provide technical support for Java mods, fix compatibility problems between them, or spend development time on them.

Can you still report bugs if you use mods?

Only if you can reproduce the bug without them. The Indie Stone will only investigate bug reports from an un-modded save, and that applies to Lua and Java mods alike. Even then, it doesn’t guarantee an investigation or a fix. If something goes wrong in a modded game, try it again without your mods before posting a report.

Are Java mods banned in Project Zomboid?

No. The Indie Stone says the policy “is not a judgement on individual mods, their creators or you as a player using them”. It’s about keeping the game testable and supportable. The studio says mods are “hugely important” and it wants the community to keep experimenting. Its existing Modding Policy already bans mods that are intentionally damaging to people’s PCs or let people play without buying the game.

Watch the Project Zomboid Build 42 showcase

What this means for Build 42 players

Project Zomboid is still in active development.
