Its first dev blog, published on 30 July 2026, promised more to share &#8220;next month&#8221;. We&#8217;ll add the release date to this article and our Release Radar as soon as it&#8217;s announced.<\/p>\n<h2>Is Rules of Engagement: The Grey State free to play?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes. The Steam page lists the game as <strong>Free to Play<\/strong>. Grey State Studio hasn&#8217;t explained its monetisation yet.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Rules of Engagement: The Grey State?<\/h2>\n<p>The game is set in a &#8220;Horrorverse&#8221; where a strange parallel dimension, the <strong>Grey State<\/strong>, is bleeding into our world. The Grey State resembles reality &#8220;but never quite follows the same rules&#8221;: physics, time and even life itself can drift out of alignment. You play as a <strong>Strider<\/strong>, an operative sent in by the <strong>Grey State Agency<\/strong> (GSA), with help from Ada, the GSA&#8217;s AI assistant. As the game&#8217;s own tagline puts it: &#8220;This isn&#8217;t about saving the world. It&#8217;s just business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>How does the co-op PvE mode work?<\/h2>\n<p>Revealed on 30 July 2026, the co-op PvE mode sends <strong>squads of three<\/strong> to <strong>Boreas Isle<\/strong>, a remote, rugged island in Northern Europe. Creatures from the Grey State arrived with a mist called the Haze and are nesting and multiplying across the island. Your job is to hold the line. Here&#8217;s what Grey State Studio has shown:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Heavy firepower:<\/strong> besides guns, you can bring Special Equipment such as a flamethrower to hold back hordes or a recoilless rifle for heavily armoured creatures. Squads should pick complementary loadouts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tactical Support:<\/strong> call in high-explosive shells to blast a path or incendiary rockets to set the ground on fire.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Smart enemies:<\/strong> creatures are fast, hunt in packs and flank, so squads need to watch each other&#8217;s backs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Changing missions:<\/strong> terrain, objectives and enemy activity vary each time, so a route that worked before may not exist next time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Doors into the Grey State:<\/strong> during an operation, a door may appear where none should exist. They give a feel for its horror:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Do not turn your back on the Bandaged Man.<\/li>\n<li>Gravity anomalies are normal.<\/li>\n<li>If black liquid begins seeping from the walls, evacuate immediately.<\/li>\n<li>If you hear movement above you, do not look up.<\/li>\n<li>Do not look directly into any camera.<\/li>\n<li>If the spotlight finds you, close your eyes.<\/li>\n<li>If you see a household appliance moving on its own, run.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The PvE trailer also shows a washing machine walking on four legs, a glowing mass of fused metal and an ancient mechanism hidden among ruins.<\/p>\n<h2>How does PvP work?<\/h2>\n<p>The squad-based PvP mode was the first to be revealed, in 2025. Squads of three venture into the Grey State, hunt, grow stronger and compete with rival squads for <strong>The Vertex<\/strong>, then try to extract alive. PvE and PvP are <strong>two separate modes<\/strong> set in the same Horrorverse, so you can choose which to play.<\/p>\n<h2>Is there a Rules of Engagement: The Grey State playtest?<\/h2>\n<p>Grey State Studio says playtest information is shared on its <strong>official Discord<\/strong>, along with events and chances to talk to the developers.
