It&#8217;s set in <strong>1959, during the Cold War<\/strong>. The Murkoff Corporation recruits unsuspecting civilians as human test subjects (called Reagents) and puts them through brutal experiments in brainwashing and mind control at its <strong>Sinyala Facility<\/strong>. According to Red Barrels, Murkoff wants to turn them into perfect sleeper agents it can release back into society.<\/p>\n<p>To earn your release, you complete Murkoff&#8217;s &#8220;therapy&#8221;: story-driven <strong>Trials<\/strong> and shorter <strong>MK-Challenges<\/strong>, which take place in modified sections of existing maps. Between them, you return to your own cell in the facility, which you can decorate, and you can customise your Reagent&#8217;s look.<\/p>\n<p>In true Outlast fashion, you can&#8217;t simply fight your way out. The core of the game is avoiding enemies, hiding and running. Murkoff hands out tools (Rigs) that you unlock and upgrade over time, letting you stun or blind enemies, see through walls, or heal yourself and your teammates. Along the way, you collect documents and items that expose Murkoff&#8217;s abuse of its patients.<\/p>\n<h2>Is The Outlast Trials on PS5 and Xbox?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes. The Outlast Trials is on <strong>PS4 and PS5<\/strong> (it&#8217;s PS5 Pro Enhanced) and on <strong>Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S<\/strong> (Optimised for Series X|S, with Smart Delivery). The console versions launched alongside the full release on 5 March 2024. On PC, it&#8217;s on Steam and the Epic Games Store.<\/p>\n<h2>Does The Outlast Trials have crossplay?<\/h2>\n<p>The Microsoft Store lists <strong>Xbox cross-platform co-op<\/strong> and cross-generation multiplayer, so Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players can team up. Red Barrels&#8217; support pages don&#8217;t currently document full crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC, so if you&#8217;re planning to play with friends on a different platform, check with them which version they own before you buy.<\/p>\n<h2>Is The Outlast Trials on Game Pass?<\/h2>\n<p>No. It isn&#8217;t included in Xbox Game Pass. The Xbox Store says it&#8217;s <strong>cloud playable<\/strong> with Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, but you still need to buy the game. On Xbox, online multiplayer also needs a Game Pass subscription.<\/p>\n<h2>How much is The Outlast Trials?<\/h2>\n<p>The Outlast Trials costs <strong>\u00a333.50 \/ $39.99 on Steam<\/strong> at its standard price. On the UK Xbox Store, the standard edition is <strong>\u00a331.99<\/strong> and the <strong>Deluxe Edition<\/strong> is <strong>\u00a341.74<\/strong>. The Deluxe Edition adds the Reagent Starter Pack:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4 Legendary outfits<\/li>\n<li>Player cell customisation<\/li>\n<li>Player icon customisation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are also cosmetic add-on packs (the Reagent Starter Pack and Sweet Release Pack are \u00a315.49 each on the UK PlayStation Store) and <strong>Murkoff Coins<\/strong>, the in-game currency, from \u00a33.69 for 500. You can complete the Trials and MK-Challenges <strong>alone or in a team of 2, 3 or 4 players<\/strong>. Red Barrels says co-op is never forced for mandatory objectives, although working together &#8220;can be highly beneficial&#8221;. Either way, the game needs an internet connection: Steam lists a broadband connection in the system requirements, and the PlayStation Store says online play is required.<\/p>\n<h2>How many players can play The Outlast Trials?<\/h2>\n<p>Up to <strong>four players<\/strong> in online co-op. There&#8217;s also a player-versus-player twist called <strong>Invasion<\/strong>: from level 30, a player can invade other teams&#8217; Trials as an <strong>Imposter<\/strong>. Invasion was reworked as &#8220;Invasion 2.0&#8221; in Season 7, with its own Imposter loadouts (gadgets such as Mimic), a new struggle minigame, Imposter night vision and new matchmaking rules.<\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s new in The Outlast Trials Season 7: Project Boneyard?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Season 7: Project Boneyard<\/strong> launched on <strong>14 July 2026<\/strong>. It&#8217;s the biggest update of the year so far:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New Trial environment, the Prison Farm:<\/strong> a brutal American prison complex.<\/li>\n<li><strong>New Trial, &#8220;Locksock the Warden&#8221;:<\/strong> marks the return of Sergeant Leland Coyle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A new enemy, The Biter:<\/strong> former forced-labour inmates who mutilated themselves in protest, then were &#8220;repaired&#8221; by Murkoff&#8217;s doctors. They prowl the Prison Farm and the new MK-Challenges.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Two new MK-Challenges:<\/strong> &#8220;Bribe the Judges&#8221; and &#8220;Cancel the Broadcast&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Quality-of-life features:<\/strong> Rig and knife customisation, loadout presets, Mastery Tasks and a new hint system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reworked modes:<\/strong> Escalation Therapy 2.0 and Invasion 2.0, with a new Invasion season.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blood Drive:<\/strong> a community event that ran from 14 July to 25 August, unlocking rewards for everyone as milestones were hit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A new Deluxe Catalog:<\/strong> &#8220;Project Boneyard&#8221;, with 10 pages of cosmetics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What did Season 7.1 add?<\/h2>\n<p>Season 7.1 arrived on <strong>8 September 2026<\/strong> with two more MK-Challenges, &#8220;Change the Program&#8221; and &#8220;Fund the Campaign&#8221;, and the <strong>Chemical Leak<\/strong> limited-time event, in which toxic gas fills the Trials until you find and shut off the valves. Chemical Leak and its event catalog ran until 6 October. Red Barrels followed it with hotfixes on 11 and 17 September, and says more is on its roadmap through the end of 2026.<\/p>\n<h2>Does The Outlast Trials support mods?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>No, not any more.<\/strong> Red Barrels ended mod support with the Season 7.1 update on 8 September 2026, saying some mods gave gameplay advantages or changed the game in unintended ways. Red Barrels&#8217; updates name <strong>Sergeant Leland Coyle<\/strong>, who returned for Project Boneyard, and <strong>Dr. Easterman<\/strong>, who believes control comes through reward. The Biter is the newest Ex-Pop.<\/p>\n<p>The score is by composer <strong>Tom Salta<\/strong> (Deathloop, PUBG, Halo), mixing haunting orchestral music with dark synth textures and eerie mid-century pastiches.<\/p>\n<h2>What are The Outlast Trials PC system requirements?<\/h2>\n<p>These are the official requirements from Steam.
