Developed by Insomniac Games in collaboration with Marvel Games and PlayStation, this single-player action-adventure promises a darker, bloodier and more personal superhero story than the studio’s hugely successful Marvel’s Spider-Man games.
Following an extended gameplay presentation, Marvel’s Wolverine received another major reveal during the “Deep Cuts” panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. Insomniac presented a new story trailer, confirmed Lady Deathstrike and The Hand, revealed more about Logan’s relationship with Jean Grey and released a digital prequel comic connected to the game.
The panel also delivered new artwork, soundtrack information and crossover content with MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. With Logan’s next adventure rapidly approaching, here is everything officially confirmed about the story, characters, gameplay, locations, editions and latest developer announcements.

Marvel’s Wolverine Release Information

Release detail

Confirmed information

Game

Marvel’s Wolverine

Release date

September 15, 2026

Platform

PlayStation 5

Developer

Insomniac Games

Partners

Marvel Games and PlayStation

Genre

Third-person action-adventure

Game mode

Single-player

Main character

James “Logan” Howlett/Wolverine

Standard Edition price

£69.99

Digital Deluxe Edition price

£79.99

Age rating

Mature

Pre-orders

Available now

PC version

Not currently announced

Xbox version

Not currently announced

When Is the Marvel’s Wolverine Release Date?

The Marvel’s Wolverine release date is September 15, 2026. The game will initially be available exclusively for PlayStation 5.
Pre-orders are available through the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Direct and participating retailers. Players can choose between the £69.99 Standard Edition and the £79.99 Digital Deluxe Edition.
Insomniac originally announced the project during the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase. Its short reveal trailer showed Logan sitting at a bar following a violent fight before extending his adamantium claws as another attacker approached.
After several years of limited official information, Insomniac revealed the first substantial gameplay footage in September 2025. A dedicated State of Play presentation in June 2026 then confirmed the final release date and provided a much deeper look at combat, progression, characters and story.
With the Marvel’s Wolverine release date approaching, Insomniac is expected to reveal further details about exploration, progression and additional characters before launch.

Watch the Marvel’s Wolverine Story Trailer

The latest Marvel’s Wolverine story trailer was revealed during the Deep Cuts panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, 2026.
The footage explores the difficult relationship between Logan and Jean Grey while introducing two major threats: the ancient assassin organisation known as The Hand and one of Wolverine’s most dangerous enemies, Lady Deathstrike.

Watch the official Marvel’s Wolverine trailer on YouTube.

The trailer begins with an enraged Logan confronting Jean during a moment of vulnerability. Their exchange suggests that Logan’s volatile nature, fragmented memories and inability to trust others will be central to the game’s emotional story.
It also shows that Logan and Jean share a desire to protect vulnerable mutants. However, their mission will place them against heavily armed organisations, cybernetic soldiers and several powerful figures connected to Wolverine’s troubled past.

What Type of Game Is Marvel’s Wolverine?

Marvel’s Wolverine is a third-person, single-player action-adventure game.
It is not being presented as a traditional role-playing game. However, the inclusion of Technique Points, unlockable combat abilities, alternative suits and different claw designs means it will contain some progression and customisation elements commonly found in action RPGs.
The main focus remains cinematic storytelling, close-range combat and large action sequences. Players will control Logan as he travels between different parts of the world, investigates his missing past and fights the organisations hunting mutantkind.
Insomniac has not officially described the game as fully open world. The international settings may instead be presented as several detailed environments connected through a story-driven campaign.
Until Insomniac confirms the game’s complete structure, it would be safer to describe Marvel’s Wolverine as a cinematic action-adventure rather than an open-world game.

What Is the Story of Marvel’s Wolverine?

Marvel’s Wolverine follows James “Logan” Howlett as he attempts to uncover the secrets of a past that continues to elude him.
Logan knows that people have manipulated, betrayed and taken things from him, but significant parts of his history remain hidden behind incomplete memories. His search for answers sends him around the world, where each piece of information appears to lead towards another dangerous enemy.
Insomniac is telling an original story rather than directly adapting a particular Wolverine film or comic. The game will draw from decades of Marvel history while creating a version of Logan specifically for Insomniac’s universe.
Although Wolverine is famous for his rage and willingness to use lethal force, his desire to protect vulnerable people remains one of his defining qualities. Insomniac appears to be exploring the conflict between Logan’s capacity for violence and his instinct to help people who cannot defend themselves.
That internal struggle should give the game a very different emotional tone from Marvel’s Spider-Man. Logan can survive almost any physical injury, but his Healing Factor cannot repair the psychological damage caused by betrayal, experimentation and memory loss.
As the Marvel’s Wolverine release date moves closer, the mystery surrounding Logan’s missing memories is likely to become an increasingly important part of Insomniac’s promotional campaign.

The X-Men Have Not Been Formed Yet

Marvel’s Wolverine takes place during an early and uncertain period for mutantkind.
According to information shared through developer interviews, the established X-Men team does not yet exist when the game begins. Superheroes such as Spider-Man are already known to the public, but mutants remain largely hidden.
Many mutants are living in fear while private military organisations hunt and capture them. There is no established X-Men team publicly defending them, and Charles Xavier’s familiar group of heroes has not yet emerged.
Jean Grey is already becoming an important leader, but she is operating without the support of the team audiences know from the comics and films. Her efforts to protect captured mutants could become an early step towards the eventual formation of the X-Men.
This gives Insomniac the opportunity to establish mutant history within its existing Marvel universe. However, neither a separate X-Men game nor a direct Wolverine sequel has been officially announced.

Logan and Jean Grey’s Relationship

Jean Grey will play a central role in the game and is portrayed by Krizia Bajos.
Jean is described as a powerful telekinetic and an emerging leader among the mutants captured by the Reavers. Logan encounters her while following the trail of missing mutants, forcing the two characters to cooperate against a shared enemy.
Their abilities complement each other during combat. Jean can use telekinesis to lift, throw and restrain opponents, creating opportunities for Logan to perform Critical Strikes and collaborative finishing moves.
Their personal relationship appears considerably more complicated.
The new story trailer shows an enraged Logan confronting Jean, suggesting that trust will be difficult to establish. Logan’s fragmented memories and unpredictable temper may make him dangerous even to the people attempting to help him.
Jean’s mental abilities could make her one of the few people capable of helping Logan explore his buried memories. Whether she can uncover the truth without causing further harm remains one of the story’s biggest unanswered questions.

Logan battles a Sentinel in Marvel’s Wolverine, highlighting the game’s brutal combat and cinematic action.

Who Plays Wolverine?

Liam McIntyre provides the voice and performance capture for Logan.
McIntyre is best known for portraying the title character in the television series Spartacus. He has worked on Marvel’s Wolverine for several years and is creating an original interpretation of Logan rather than attempting to imitate an earlier performance.
This version retains Wolverine’s resilience, aggression, dry humour and instinct to protect others. However, the original story gives McIntyre and Insomniac an opportunity to explore different parts of the character.
The development team has repeatedly emphasised that the human being behind the claws is just as important as the violence surrounding him.

Confirmed Marvel’s Wolverine Characters

Insomniac has already revealed an impressive collection of heroes, mutants and villains.

Wolverine

James “Logan” Howlett is the game’s main character.
His mutation provides heightened senses, an accelerated Healing Factor and extraordinary resilience. Experiments conducted on Logan also resulted in the nearly indestructible metal adamantium being bonded to his skeleton.
His incomplete memories, history with Team X and connections to multiple enemy organisations will drive the story.

Jean Grey

Jean Grey is a powerful telekinetic mutant and an emerging leader among the people targeted by the Reavers.
Jean can fight alongside Logan and create opportunities for combined Critical Strikes. She will also have an important emotional connection to Wolverine throughout the story.

Sabretooth

Sabretooth is one of Wolverine’s oldest and most personal enemies.
Official footage has shown the character surrounded by flames and confronting Logan. Other promotional material suggests that their relationship may be more complicated than a straightforward battle between a hero and villain.
Sabretooth could temporarily share an objective with Logan, but any alliance between the two is unlikely to remain stable.

Mystique

Mystique has appeared in official promotional footage and pre-order artwork.
Her shapeshifting abilities make her intentions difficult to read. Insomniac has not confirmed whether she will work alongside Logan, oppose him or move between both sides of the conflict.

Omega Red

The powerful mutant villain Omega Red has also been revealed.
Omega Red possesses extraordinary strength and uses deadly carbonadium tentacles as weapons. His inclusion gives Wolverine an enemy capable of matching his physical aggression and surviving an intense close-range fight.
His complete connection to Logan’s investigation remains unknown.

Lady Deathstrike

Lady Deathstrike is described as one of the game’s major villains.
Her cybernetic enhancements, bladed fingers and history with Wolverine make her a natural adversary. Like Logan, her body has been enhanced with powerful technology, but her hatred of Wolverine makes their conflict deeply personal.
Her inclusion could also connect to the game’s wider themes of experimentation, physical transformation and weaponised technology.

Bolivar Trask

Bolivar Trask is a billionaire industrialist driven by a fanatical belief in human superiority.
He employs the Reavers to capture mutants and deliver them to him. His presence also explains why mutant-hunting Sentinels have begun to appear within the game’s world.
Trask may not possess Logan’s physical strength, but his wealth, technology and influence make him one of the greatest threats facing mutantkind.

The Hand Confirmed as an Enemy Faction

The San Diego Comic-Con story trailer confirmed that Wolverine will fight The Hand.
The Hand is an ancient organisation of highly trained assassins commonly associated with ninjas, organised crime and supernatural activity. New artwork shows Logan fighting assassins wearing the organisation’s recognisable red clothing.
Insomniac has confirmed that Wolverine and The Hand share a history that players will uncover throughout the campaign.
This connection could be linked to Logan’s time in Japan, his martial arts training or another part of his missing past. The organisation may also possess information Logan needs, giving him a reason to pursue its members through Tokyo.
Fighting The Hand should introduce a different type of enemy. Their speed, agility and bladed weapons will require a different approach from battling heavily armed Reavers or enormous Sentinels.

The Reavers Are Hunting Mutants

The Reavers are a mercenary force equipped with advanced weapons, armour and cybernetic implants.
They have been hired to hunt mutants and deliver their captives to Bolivar Trask. Their complete plans for the prisoners have not been explained, but Jean and Logan are determined to stop them.
Different Reaver units will require different strategies. Standard soldiers can attack with firearms and advanced weapons, while larger Brutes can withstand more punishment and physically challenge Wolverine.
The Reavers appear to be one of the main recurring enemy factions. However, their work for Trask suggests they represent only one part of a much larger campaign against mutantkind.

Will Marvel’s Wolverine Have Sentinels?

Mutant-hunting Sentinels have appeared in official footage, confirming their existence within Insomniac’s Marvel universe.
The machines are closely associated with Bolivar Trask, who traditionally creates them to identify, capture and eliminate mutants.
Insomniac has not revealed how frequently Sentinels will appear or whether players will fight a full-sized machine during normal gameplay. Their enormous scale makes them strong candidates for boss battles and cinematic set pieces.
Their existence also demonstrates how quickly the threat against mutants is developing. The game begins before the formation of the X-Men, but humanity is already creating technology specifically designed to hunt them.

Wolverine prepares to battle a towering Sentinel, highlighting one of the game’s largest and most destructive encounters.

Marvel’s Wolverine Gameplay Details

Marvel’s Wolverine uses fast, aggressive and highly physical third-person combat.
Logan does not possess Spider-Man’s acrobatic movement, web-based gadgets or preference for non-lethal takedowns. Wolverine closes the distance between himself and his enemies, absorbs punishment and uses his claws to end fights quickly.
Players can stalk opponents, ambush enemies from above, parry incoming attacks and use Logan’s heightened senses to examine their surroundings.
Once a fight begins, Wolverine can combine standard claw attacks with powerful Techniques and finishing moves. The combat is intended to feel fast, fluid and relentless while reflecting the destructive potential of adamantium claws.
The extended footage provided the clearest look at combat ahead of the Marvel’s Wolverine release date, but several progression and difficulty systems remain unexplained.

Techniques and Critical Strikes

Logan can use special combat abilities known as Techniques.
Two confirmed Techniques are:
Tornado Spin: A rotating claw attack capable of hitting multiple nearby enemies.
Bull Rush: An aggressive forward attack that allows Wolverine to close the distance and overpower an opponent.
Successful attacks and environmental opportunities can also create Critical Strikes. These are devastating finishing moves that Logan can perform alone or alongside supporting characters.
Jean Grey’s telekinetic powers can restrain or destabilise enemies, creating an opening for Wolverine to execute a Critical Strike. These combined attacks should make companion encounters feel like part of the gameplay rather than purely cinematic sequences.

How Wolverine’s Rage System Works

Every successful attack, parry and kill builds Wolverine’s Rage.
Accumulated Rage can strengthen Logan’s attacks or activate his Healing Factor after he suffers serious damage. Players may therefore need to choose between using Rage offensively or preserving it for survival.
If the Rage meter reaches its highest level, Logan can unleash Rage Tier 3.
This transforms the action into a stylised monochromatic sequence inspired by Marvel’s Wolverine: Black, White & Blood. The visual presentation emphasises the intensity of the violence while showing Logan surrendering to his berserker instincts.
The system appears designed to reward controlled aggression. Staying close to enemies and maintaining pressure will make Wolverine more dangerous, but players must still parry attacks and manage their resources.

Healing Factor and Last Stand

Wolverine’s accelerated Healing Factor is incorporated directly into gameplay.
When Logan is seriously injured, he can use accumulated Rage to recover. If he is approaching defeat, the Last Stand mechanic allows him to activate his Healing Factor and continue fighting.
This does not necessarily make Wolverine invincible. Healing requires a resource, meaning players may not always be able to recover immediately after taking heavy damage.
By connecting regeneration to Rage, Insomniac can retain one of Wolverine’s most recognisable powers without removing all challenge from combat.

Wolverine engages in a brutal close-quarters fight against a masked enemy, showcasing the game’s fast-paced melee combat and cinematic action.

How Violent Is Marvel’s Wolverine?

Marvel’s Wolverine is designed as a mature and deliberately violent interpretation of the character.
Official gameplay footage contains blood, visible claw wounds, dismemberment and brutal finishing moves. Logan can impale opponents, remove limbs and use parts of the environment during combat.
This is a significant tonal departure from Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man games. Wolverine’s claws are lethal weapons, and the studio has chosen to show the physical consequences of using them.
The violence is not simply being added for shock value. It reflects Logan’s powers, personality and the extreme threats he faces. It also reinforces the conflict between his desire to protect people and his capacity to lose control.

Motorcycle Chase and Action Set Pieces

The game will include large cinematic set pieces alongside its standard combat encounters.
One revealed sequence places Logan on a motorcycle while pursuing a Reaver convoy. Players can attack trucks, slash tyres, throw enemies from vehicles and leap between moving targets.
Larger Reaver Brutes also appear during the chase, forcing Wolverine to fight powerful opponents while travelling at high speed.
Sequences like this should provide variety between conventional encounters. They also allow Insomniac to use the cinematic presentation developed through its Spider-Man games while giving Wolverine a more grounded and destructive identity.

Confirmed Locations

Logan’s search for answers will take him to several locations around the world.

Madripoor

Madripoor is a fictional island nation with longstanding connections to Wolverine.
Its criminal underworld, crowded streets and limited law enforcement make it an ideal place for Logan to search for information. The location has frequently been connected to organised crime, smugglers and Wolverine’s Patch identity in Marvel Comics.

Canada

The Canadian wilderness is closely connected to Logan’s origins and history.
The frozen environments shown in official footage could explore his memories, involvement with Team X or the experiments that transformed his body.

Tokyo

Japan has played a major role throughout Wolverine’s comic history.
Tokyo may provide the connection between Logan, The Hand and Lady Deathstrike. It also gives Insomniac an opportunity to explore Wolverine’s martial arts training and his familiarity with Japanese culture.
Additional locations may be revealed before the Marvel’s Wolverine release date arrives in September.

Marvel’s Wolverine Prequel Comic

Insomniac Games and Marvel have released an official digital prequel comic connected to the game.
The comic is written by Narrative Director Walt Williams, with artwork by Luke Ross and a cover created by Iban Coello.
Its story takes place before the game and explores Logan’s difficult relationship with members of Team X during a mission to protect mutantkind.
Team X is an important part of Wolverine’s mysterious past. Reading the comic should provide additional context for the game’s opening events and explain why Logan may struggle to trust his former allies.
A physical version was distributed as an exclusive San Diego Comic-Con giveaway. The digital version is available through Marvel Unlimited.

Who Composed the Marvel’s Wolverine Soundtrack?

Award-winning composer David Fleming created the music for Marvel’s Wolverine.
The score is designed to shift dynamically alongside Logan’s journey, moving between quieter emotional scenes and intense combat encounters.
The complete soundtrack is scheduled for release on August 28, 2026, more than two weeks before the Marvel’s Wolverine release date. An individual track is already available through Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music.
Releasing the soundtrack before launch suggests that music will play an important role in establishing the game’s darker identity.

Marvel’s Wolverine Standard Edition

The Standard Edition costs £69.99 and contains the complete game.
Customers who pre-order receive:

Early unlock of the Classic Brown Suit

Early unlock of Reflective Claws

One additional Technique Point

Four PlayStation avatars featuring Wolverine, Jean Grey, Mystique and Sabretooth

The Classic Brown Suit and Reflective Claws are described as early unlocks. The additional Technique Points may allow players to unlock abilities sooner, but they do not appear to provide exclusive powers unavailable through ordinary progression.
Players preparing for the Marvel’s Wolverine release date can therefore choose the Standard Edition without losing access to the main story or standard gameplay content.

Wolverine uses his signature adamantium claws in a fast-paced combat encounter, demonstrating the brutal melee action at the heart of Marvel’s Wolverine.

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls Crossover

Insomniac Games and Arc System Works have announced a crossover between Marvel’s Wolverine and MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
Wolverine’s stylised suit from MARVEL Tōkon will be unlockable through normal progression in Marvel’s Wolverine from launch day. The design gives Logan an appearance inspired by Arc System Works’ distinctive visual style.
The crossover will also work in the opposite direction.
The Battle Reborn suit from Insomniac’s game will become available in MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls as free content for all players from September 1, 2026.

Accessibility Features

Marvel’s Wolverine will launch with a substantial collection of accessibility options designed to assist players with visual, auditory, cognitive and motor disabilities.
Confirmed features include high-contrast presets, coloured outlines for friendly characters and enemies, adjustable outline thickness, outline brightness controls, subtitle options and assistance for different input requirements.
Insomniac has established a strong accessibility record through Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. A complete list of the planned Wolverine accessibility features is available through the developer’s official support website.

Is Marvel’s Wolverine Connected to Spider-Man?

Marvel’s Wolverine takes place within the wider universe established by Insomniac’s Marvel games.
Superheroes such as Peter Parker and Miles Morales already exist, and the public is aware of Spider-Man. However, mutants remain largely hidden, and the X-Men have not yet formed.
Wolverine is being presented as a standalone adventure. Players should not need to complete the Spider-Man games to understand Logan’s story.
No appearance from Peter Parker, Miles Morales or another Spider-Man character has been officially confirmed.
The most important connection may be the development of Insomniac’s wider Marvel universe. Wolverine’s story could introduce mutants before they become a major public presence.

Is Marvel’s Wolverine Coming to PC?

A PC version has not been announced.
The game will launch exclusively for PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026.
Sony has eventually released several Insomniac games on PC, including Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
This means a future PC version is possible, but there is currently no confirmed release window or official announcement.

Is Marvel’s Wolverine Coming to Xbox?

Marvel’s Wolverine has not been announced for Xbox Series X|S.
The game is being developed by Sony-owned Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. An Xbox release is therefore extremely unlikely.

Latest Marvel’s Wolverine Developer Updates

The biggest recent update came from the Deep Cuts panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, 2026.
The presentation confirmed:

A new story trailer

Lady Deathstrike as a major villain

The Hand as an enemy faction

New artwork featuring Logan fighting The Hand

Further details about Logan and Jean Grey

An official prequel comic

David Fleming as the game’s composer

An August 28 soundtrack release

Crossover content with MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls

Continued availability of pre-orders

Insomniac is expected to reveal more about progression, exploration, suits, claws and additional characters before launch.
The latest announcements have added considerably more context ahead of the Marvel’s Wolverine release date, but the developer is still keeping several important story details secret.

Why Marvel’s Wolverine Could Be Insomniac’s Darkest Game

Marvel’s Wolverine gives Insomniac an opportunity to explore subjects that would be difficult to address through Spider-Man.
Logan is shaped by experimentation, memory loss, betrayal and violence. His powers allow him to survive terrible physical injuries, but they cannot repair the emotional damage caused by his past.
The world surrounding him is equally hostile. Mutants remain hidden, private forces are capturing them and Bolivar Trask is using fear and technology to target an entire group of people.
Insomniac still appears committed to delivering spectacular action and cinematic set pieces. However, the most compelling part of the game may be the contrast between Logan’s brutality and his determination to protect people more vulnerable than himself.
With the Marvel’s Wolverine release date set for September 15, 2026, Insomniac’s darkest Marvel adventure is now only weeks away. Its combination of brutal combat, international locations, famous mutant characters and an emotionally driven story could make it one of the biggest PlayStation 5 releases of the year.

Useful links

Official Marvel’s Wolverine PlayStation page

Latest official PlayStation Blog update

Insomniac Games

Marvel official website

Marvel’s Wolverine accessibility information

PlayStation Store

Related Articles

Indiana Jones Great Circle Review – A Thrilling Adventure

Ghost of Tsushima On PC: Official Requirements Revealed!

Rust Naval Update 2026 – Is Rust Still Worth Playing This Year?

What is the Marvel’s Wolverine release date?

Marvel’s Wolverine will be released for PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026.

Who is developing Marvel’s Wolverine?

Marvel’s Wolverine is being developed by Insomniac Games in collaboration with Marvel Games and PlayStation.

Is Marvel’s Wolverine a single-player game?

Yes.
