We have written it to be clear and specific to how this website actually works.

Who we are

igamemag.com is an independent, non-profit publication run by David Ware, based in London, England. David Ware is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy; “we”, “us” and “our” in this policy mean David Ware and iGame Magazine.

For anything about your privacy or this policy, email admin@igamemag.com. We don’t have a formal Data Protection Officer; privacy questions are handled directly by our Managing Editor, David Ware.

The short version

You can read iGame Magazine without giving us your name or email address.

If you’re in the UK, the EEA or Switzerland, we only use analytics cookies (Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity) if you say yes in our cookie banner, and you can change your mind at any time.

We don’t sell your data, we don’t currently run advertising, and we don’t send marketing emails.

Like every website, our servers and security tools see your IP address so the site can be delivered and protected from attacks.

What we collect and why

1. When you browse the site

Technical data: your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you request and the time of the request. This is processed by our web host, by Cloudflare (which delivers the site and protects it from attacks and bots) and by our security software (Wordfence), which uses it to detect and block malicious traffic. Our images are delivered by ShortPixel’s image network, which also sees your IP address when your browser loads them.

Lawful basis: our legitimate interests in delivering a working, fast and secure website.

2. Analytics (only with your consent where the law requires it)

We use Google Analytics to understand which articles are read, how people find us and how the site performs, and Microsoft Clarity to see how readers use our pages through heatmaps and session recordings of clicks and scrolling. This helps us decide what to write and improve the site. Clarity hides anything you type, and neither tool is used to identify you by name.

If you visit from the UK, the EEA or Switzerland, these tools only set cookies and Clarity only runs after you accept analytics cookies. If you decline, Google Analytics may receive limited, cookie-free signals that can’t identify you. Visitors from other countries are measured without a banner, in line with the law where they live.

Lawful basis: your consent (UK/EEA/Switzerland); our legitimate interests in understanding our audience (elsewhere).

3. Your cookie choice

When you make a choice in our cookie banner, we keep a record of it so we can show that consent was given: a random ID, the date and time, your choices, the version of our cookie notice and the country reported by Cloudflare. We do not store your IP address with this record.

Lawful basis: our legal obligation to be able to demonstrate consent.

4. When you contact us

If you email us (for example with a news tip, a correction or a business enquiry), we receive your email address, your name if you give it, and whatever you choose to tell us. We use it only to reply and to deal with your message.

Lawful basis: our legitimate interests in responding to you, or taking steps you have asked for.

5. Comments

Comments are currently closed on all articles. If we open them in future and you leave a comment, we will store the name, email address and comment you enter, plus your IP address and browser details for spam and abuse prevention. Your name and comment are shown publicly; your email address is not.

Lawful basis: our legitimate interests in hosting discussion and preventing spam.

6. Videos and trailers

Most trailers are shown as an image that links to the video. Nothing is loaded from YouTube (or any other video site) until you click, and the video then opens on that site, which processes data under its own policy (YouTube’s is Google’s privacy policy). A few older articles have an embedded player instead: it shows a still image and only loads from YouTube’s privacy-enhanced domain (youtube-nocookie.com) when you press play.

7. Release Radar watchlist and calendars

If you star games on our Release Radar, your watchlist is saved only in your own browser; it is never sent to us. If you subscribe to a Release Radar calendar, your calendar app downloads the calendar file from our website from time to time. That request includes the IDs of the games in your watchlist (if you chose a watchlist calendar) but nothing that identifies you, and it’s handled like any other visit to the site (see section 1).

8. Our social media pages

If you follow, comment on or message our pages on X, Facebook, Discord or other platforms, those platforms process your data under their own privacy policies. We see what they show to page owners, such as your public profile, your comments and messages, and statistics about how our posts perform. We use scheduling tools (Typefully and Metricool) to prepare and publish our posts; they handle our page statistics but receive no data from our website.

Lawful basis: our legitimate interests in running our social media pages and replying to you.

Cookies

Our Cookie Policy lists every cookie we use, what it does and how long it lasts. You can change or withdraw your consent at any time using the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.

Who we share data with

We don’t sell or rent personal data. We share it only with service providers who process it on our behalf, under contracts that require them to protect it:

Provider

What they do for us

Data involved

Our web hosting provider

Hosts the website and its database

Technical data, comments, consent records

Cloudflare

Delivers the site quickly and protects it from attacks and bots

Technical data

Wordfence (Defiant Inc.)

Website security and firewall

IP address and request details

ShortPixel

Optimises and delivers the site’s images

IP address and request details

Google (Google Analytics)

Audience statistics

Analytics data (with consent in the UK/EEA)

Microsoft (Clarity)

Heatmaps and session recordings

Analytics data (with consent in the UK/EEA)

Our email provider

Receives and stores emails you send us

Your emails

Typefully and Metricool

Schedule our social media posts and show their statistics

Public interactions with our social media posts

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect our rights or safety or those of others, or to a buyer if the business is ever sold (in which case this policy would continue to apply to your data).

International transfers

Some of these providers (including Google, Microsoft and Cloudflare) process data in the United States or other countries outside the UK and EEA. Where they do, the transfer is protected by recognised safeguards, such as the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

How long we keep data

Google Analytics: user-level data is kept for 14 months and detailed event data for 2 months, then deleted automatically.

Microsoft Clarity: session recordings are kept for 30 days and summary data (such as heatmaps) for up to 13 months.

Consent records: 3 years, then deleted automatically.

Security and server logs: only as long as needed to keep the site secure, normally a few weeks.

Emails: as long as needed to deal with your message, and no longer than 2 years afterwards unless we need them for a legal reason.

Comments: for as long as the article is published, or until you ask us to remove yours.

Your rights

Under UK and EU data protection law (UK GDPR and EU GDPR) you have the right to:

access the personal data we hold about you;

ask us to correct inaccurate data;

ask us to delete your data;

ask us to restrict how we use it;

object to processing based on our legitimate interests;

receive your data in a portable format (data portability);

withdraw your consent at any time, for example through Cookie settings, without affecting anything done before you withdrew it.

To use any of these rights, email admin@igamemag.com. We will reply within one month. We don’t charge for this, and we may ask you to confirm your identity first. Because we deliberately don’t link analytics data to names, we may not be able to find data relating to you unless you can give us details that identify it (such as the consent ID stored in your browser’s igame_consent cookie).

Complaints

If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, please contact us first and we’ll do our best to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113), or to the data protection authority in the EU country where you live.

Children

iGame Magazine is a general-audience website and is not aimed at children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

Security

The site is served only over encrypted HTTPS connections, protected by a firewall and security monitoring, and access to our systems is restricted. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your data.

Automated decisions

We don’t make decisions about you based solely on automated processing, and we don’t build profiles of individual readers for advertising.

Changes to this policy

We’ll update this policy when the way we handle personal data changes, and the date below will change. If we start using a new kind of tracking, we’ll also ask for your cookie consent again.

Contact

David Ware, iGame Magazine, London, England.
